Do you ever feel as though your head is full of goodness knows what? If you find that you struggle to think straight at times or old conversations continue to go round in your head then it may be time to Spring Clean Your Mind.
It can be easy to hold on to old ways of thinking or doing things. We also can easily develop thoughts, habits, ideas that seem to hold us back and whilst we might know they are they, we are not always sure what to do to change them. Wouldn’t it be great if we could spring clean our minds, in the same way we can spring clean our homes? Well, we can!
This may take some effort and time, but then all spring-cleaning does! What areas of your mind, or even your life, could you clean up a little? I will be making time to clear out the old dead plants in my garden and planting new ones. You can do this with your mind too. How many thoughts and feelings are still sitting in the memory banks of your mind, cultivating worry, negativity or self doubt?
Clean Up Your Self Talk
The way we talk to ourselves can stop us from being able to do things or to achieve. Have a listen to the words and phrases you use. Are you using lots of negative phrasing? If your language is full of “not” words (can’t, don’t, won’t, am not) then try to notice when you do this. Changing wording to something more positive can really help the way we feel. Rather than saying I’m not stressed it would be better to completely re-phrase to I am calm and remove the “not” and the negative “stressed” word.
Put Fresh Paint on Your Imagery
The mind cannot distinguish between real and imaginary. So if you take a few moments each day to think about how you would like to be and imagine yourself in that situation it can really help. Make sure you are vivid with the imagery and include how you speak, tone of voice, body language, movement, posture, smiles – everything in the way you would wish to be. That way, when you are actually in the situation you mind believes you’ve already done this in the positive way and it’s so much easier to repeat.
Clear Out Old Thoughts and Feelings
In the same way we might sort out our spring or summer clothes and evaluate what still fits and what we like, we can do that with thoughts and feelings too. Let go of upset, anger or frustration. Holding feelings in from an old situation or circumstance can just eat away at us. It can hold you back and stop you being able to move forward or even stop you from feeling happy. Find a way to let it go.
Spring Back to Your Childhood
When was the last time you really had some fun? With pressures of daily life, general busyness, money worries we can often forget to engage in our playful side. Having fun raises our energy levels and laughing is a great stress reliever. Find some times in your day or week to engage in activities or with people who enable you to have fun.
What Could You Do?
The lighter, brighter days and (hopefully) warmer weather increases your serotonin levels, so give it a real boost and make space for it instead of letting old stuff weigh you down. Be the best you can be.
If you have things going on that are just not helpful to you anymore maybe you need to make a little space in your head, to create space in your life to feel a bit happier, more comfortable or even space for something completely new!
