What on earth has cake got to do with creating confidence and achievement?
Well, keep reading to find out.
Recently, for my 14 year old daughter, the school anxiety hit. She’s got her first GCSE (the rest are next year) and her mindset went off the scale on fear, self doubt and not feeling good enough. When that happens any confidence that might be there just disappears.
It wasn’t pleasant 😱. When big feelings hit it’s difficult to control then isn’t it! We often do things we’re not proud of and this is 10 fold with a teen who is in emotional turmoil anyway.
- I let the offload happen – it’s important not to bottle up these feelings.
- Then we talked about her fears and her beliefs.
- We calmed down the anxiety.
- We looked for successes.
- We made a plan.
Then we looked for things she could do that would light her up, that would help her feel good, that she felt she could achieve. Confidence is all about having the feeling that we can achieve. We all need to get a sense of achievement at some time or other – that’s when the baking came in.
The thing about baking is there’s a clear plan – the recipe.
- There’s straight forward instructions, step by step.
- There’s a measures & timeframes in the ingredients, oven temperature and length of cooking time.
- There’s an achievable outcome – cupcakes!
- There’s reward! You get to eat the cupcakes!
- So at the end did she feel like she’d achieved something. YES.
Will she want to do it again – definitely. So the confidence in herself was elevated.
You know life and business is like this too. We need enough of a positive mindset to believe in ourselves and believe that we CAN do things. We need to feel confident to have a go.
We also need clear actions, plans and support. That, in turn, gives us the evidence we need that we have achieved something.
When you’ve got that – you’ve got a fabulous recipe for success.
So today, have a little think and see if you KNOW what calms you down and helps you regroup, reset, re-balance or bounce back? Begin to notice the things that you do where you already feel confident, so you can return to them if the wobbles hit. Let me know in the comments what yours are.
If you really don’t know, then get in touch or book a call to see how working with me can help you identify these things, you can become more self aware and have tools and techniques to help in those times of self doubt, fear and worry.
